About Yves Atom Art

My Journey

Hi, I'm Yves ( /iːv/ "eve/eev" ), also known as Yves Atom Art. My life has been intertwined with art from the very beginning. Even before I was born, my mother played classical and vocal R&B music to me in the womb, setting the stage for a life rich in creativity. Growing up in Berkeley, CA, in the 90s, I wasn't allowed to watch TV or play video games. Instead, I was encouraged to explore the world around me, ensuring a strong foundation for my artistic soul.

When I moved to Hawaii at 8 years old, I discovered the wonders of Nintendo, movies, and cartoons. These new experiences captivated me, but the tragic events of 9/11 soon exposed me to the broader realities of the world. Struggling with depression, I found solace and purpose in art. This journey was supported by my education at Montessori and Waldorf schools, which provided a nurturing environment for my creativity.

Both of my parents are creative—my dad is a sculptor and graphic designer, and my mom works in the hair and beauty industry. They encouraged my artistic pursuits, and I often practiced art, heavily influenced by my grandfather's wisdom on spirituality and the universe, despite his physical absence.

Artistic Philosophy and Style

My art is a synthesis of various forms and experiences. I absorb everything around me, sending it to my subconscious, where it transforms into creations I couldn't consciously imagine. I'm inspired by the emotional impact of art, focusing on contrast, process, and the visible years of precision in each piece.

Japanese art, with its emphasis on minimalism and the artist's dedication, heavily influences my style. I admire how Japanese artists use just enough detail to convey their vision, a skill I strive to emulate.

My artistic philosophy stems from my youth and a desire to make a positive difference. Battling suicidal depression in my teens, I vowed to live as long as I could contribute positively to the world. This commitment to doing good fuels my existence.

During COVID, I rediscovered murals, an art form I hadn't engaged with since high school. This reawakening, alongside my experiences with fire flow arts, music school, and travel, helped me find my place and happiness. Now, I spend most of my time in the studio working on projects or riding my street triple R to the local rock climbing gym, believing that the greatest rewards come from dedicated effort.

Professional Achievements

My professional journey has been diverse and fulfilling. I've showcased my work in galleries, including the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu. Working with an interior designer who challenged me with various art forms reinforced my belief that you can achieve anything with determination.

Some of my notable projects include murals and installations at Ronald McDonald House Charities, Tseu Innovation Center at Sacred Hearts Academy, Damien Memorial School, and Il Gelato Hawaii. These experiences reignited my love for large-scale painting.

My art and music have been featured on KHON and other local news stations. Under my music moniker, Mettā Atom, I've secured label deals, including winning a song contest with Dirty Bird Records, and performed at High Vibes Festival and other venues in California and Hawaii. Furthermore, live painting opportunities with Il Gelato Hawaii and Popculture AP have been particularly fulfilling, as I've been told that I resonate at my highest vibration when performing.

Behind the Scenes Insights

My creative process begins with conceptualization, considering all variables to make the project resonate at its highest. Sketching, a lifelong practice, brings my ideas to life. Adding color and life to these sketches, I create works based on commission, always striving to exceed client expectations.

When I take my work to the canvas, whether it’s a wall or a digital art board, I leave my mind open to discovery. As I enter the zone, flowing with akashic consciousness, I uncover new techniques and strategies. This part of the process is filled with memories and past experiences, guiding my hand. I embrace mistakes, seeing them as opportunities for innovation rather than setbacks. In fact, I've found that a mistake can evolve into a motif of the artwork, adding depth and character to the piece if you are open to it.
